Drop ceiling tiles installation
Drop ceiling tiles: design
You choose either the 2` x 2` pattern or 2` x 4` pattern for your drop ceiling tiles. Draw the ceiling dimensions on a graph paper to find the position of the main T’s and the interlocking T’s. Also, you should localize the place of the lightings and fixtures.
The spaces between the cross T’s should be considered. The borders of the tiles should be equal at the end of the room. The 4-foot interlocking cross T’s at a distance of 2 feet from each other when you are using a 2` x 4` pattern. When your choice is the 2` x 4` pattern, the 2-foot interlocking cross T’s midway between the 4-foot interlocking cross T’s.
Drop ceiling tiles: lighting
Consider it a good practice to localize the light and fixtures on the drawing graph paper. Usually, the height of the drop ceiling tiles should be 3 to 4 inches down from the old ceiling. more clearance is needed if you are going to install recessed lighting.
Drop ceiling tiles: wall angles
First things first, you need to draw a line around the room. You should use a level to draw the line. The line serves to indicate the location of the wall angle. It is a quite a mistake to use the old ceiling as a level.
Second, at all the pre-determined points, nail the wall angles to the studs. Fasteners such as screws are used to anchor the wall angles on brick or masonry walls. The bottom flange should be fixed facing down and resting on the drawn level line.
Third, on the inside corners, the wall angles are overlapped, on the outside corners, they are mitered on.
Drop ceiling tiles: wires
The recessed lighting wires should be installed first before the suspension wires. The current, before mentioned, drop-in lighting fixtures are designated to install the recessed lighting. The fluorescent light fixtures are positioned in the center over the tiles. A luminous lay-in panel is available to replace the ordinary one for lighting purposes.
Drop ceiling tiles: suspension wires
The suspension wire should be 12 inches longer than the length of the space between the old and new ceilings. Use a stretched line across the room to serve for positioning the main T’s. Notice that the line should start from the top edge of the wall angle at the points where the main T’s are planned to be placed.
Localize the point of crossing of the main T and the first interlocking crossing T. Above this crossing point; the first suspension wire is fixed. The wires should be fastened securely. The wires are applied by screw eyes, or screw hooks or nails.
With the help of the level guide, the rest of the suspension wires are placed at 4 feet apart. Then, remove the kinks. A 90-degree bend is made on crossing the level line.
Drop ceiling tiles: splicing the main T’s
Measure the distance between the wall to the first cross T on the layout sheet. Then, measure such distance on the top flange of the main T. beyond this point, locate a slot. Measure back the same distance and subtract 1/8“. Mark the last point. This will be a cut point. Sew the main T at the cut point you have localized. The subtracted segment is used to support the wall angle and add to its thickness.
You should pay close attention to the alignment of the splices. Better alignment means better localization of the suspension wires. Splice carefully for the success of your project.
Drop ceiling tiles: the installation
At this phase, the main T is going to be installed. The main T should be installed with the level of the wall angle that has been mounted in the previous step. Installation of the main T is followed by installation of the interlocking crossing T’s. The slots, you have made before, are the seat of the crossing T’s. Do not forget to review the manufacturer instructions.
Drop ceiling tiles: the tiles
Tilt the panels slightly and elevate them above the framework. Then, let go of them into its place. It is done. Repeat the same for the other panels.
